Red Beach

Red Beach in Vieques (Playa Caracas) is about the finest of the beaches on the eastern end of the island and one of the prettiest beaches on Vieques. Pure, fine, white sand, gentle seas, snorkeling on and around eastern end. Cabanas set up for family gatherings and picnics. No other shade, so bring a beach umbrella for little ones in case the cabanas are occupied. Volcanic outcroppings and hill views add to the scene.

Magnificent!  This was a favorite of ours in Sunday afternoons when we didn't want to drive TOO far, just wanted to take a picnic, loll in the water, swim laps up and down, float on a raft.  It's a picture perfect Caribbean beach.

Update March 2010
The aerial view to the left shows the road to Red Beach (Playa Caracas), recently paved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which now administers the former Navy lands.
