Asociación
De Comerciantes Viequenses
Vieques Chamber of Commerce
PO Box 937
Vieques, PR 00765
…..and you will receive a voting ballot at the door….
Membership benefits are numerous but include the dedicated work
of 12 people involved in the administration of the group, who
have been involved in a variety of meetings and letter writing,
and advocacy with various government agencies and agency heads;
as well as re-developing and solidifying the organization.
The Board recently met with Sgt Belardo and the Municipal Police
Commissioner Enid Encarnacion to hear about the plans for
improved Police work and protection, and we are encouraged that
things are moving in the right directions. Getting court venue
in Vieques will be something for us to push as an organization
which would surely help in prosecutions. Seven Municipal
officers are going back on the streets this month, to be sworn
in on the 13th. This is very good news!
We have met with Ibsen Santiago, the the Director of the
Maritime Transportation Authority, as reported here in the VE's
last month, and we had a presentation by the organizers of the
upcoming Bioluminescent Symposium to see how we might help in
this very important event.
The Environmental Committee has been hard at work addressing
many of our most important issues of health and island
cleanliness and preservation.
The Tourism Committee has been networking and establishing
contacts to assist in growing tourism on the island, and we
worked on the distribution of a survey needed by the
Municipality to 264 business owners on the island. The questions
were primarily about the future development of Vieques.
We are also resurrecting the Vieques Tourism Brochure and making
it Bi-Lingual . Hopefully , PR Tourism will again, assist us in
this endeavor. We are currently seeking a meeting with the
Tourism Director to have a better feel for what the intentions
are for Vieques.
The Public Relations Committee has a web page/domain designed
where all members will be listed with their contact info and web
pages/email if applicable as well as a Members Forum to
communicate with one another and a proposed Bulletin Board to
make business and community based announcements…
There will also be a Health Insurance Representative at this
meeting with information on the group coverage that will soon be
available thru the Assoc./Chamber. We also hope to see the
presence of the new Municipal Police force at our meeting.
We want to thank the Mayor and Municipality for providing us
with the MultiUse for our large meetings.
We want to thank the Vieques Events for providing space and
support each month for these updates!!
The Assoc/Chamber will be sponsoring various social and
networking events throughout the year, along with possible
workshops being offered on various business and community
topics; and will continue on our quest of developing a strong
and influential base in our community, and with the government
agencies, so we have a powerful and influential voice in our own
future. Without a strong organization, we run the risk of not
having any say in what happens in our community.
We need members to make us stronger, and we need volunteer
members to become possible board members and/or to help out on
various committees & with the expansive work that needs to be
done.
At this event on Nov 5th, there will be a regular, but brief
Business Meeting to update members on the events and work of the
last 6 mos; and to re-instate, or vote in new Officers and Board
Members, and to give people an opportunity to volunteer for
committee work.
BUT-
The Feature Attraction that we are putting together is a
presentation by management from the new W Hotel.
Eduardo Gonzalez, Director of Talent (Human Resources);
Iris Acosta, Director of Sales & Marketing
And the new General Manager , yet to be disclosed, are
scheduled.
This is an opportunity for us to meet W administrative personnel
, and to hear about their community goals, philosophy, and
endeavors, as well as a chance to get questions answered; and
for them to meet us! The indication so far has been that they
intend to be much more community based, and active, than we have
seen in the past.
The second presentation will be by the Vieques Vice Mayor, David
Legrand who will talk about a program to boost sales in Isabel
II during high volume events like the Friday after Thanksgiving,
Christmas, Valentines, etc.
We hope to perhaps have some of the returning Municipal Police
on hand as well.
Following all this , there will be some music and food and
beverages and time to network and a further opportunity to
become a member .
