Dave Krueger's work celebrates the wild horses' raw beauty and continued existence on an island where they are considered an "invasive species"; this in spite of the fact that over two-thirds of Vieques' 55 square miles is a newly designated federal wildlife refuge. In spring
2004, Krueger noted the birth of many more foals than he'd seen in
previous years. He was enthralled, and found a reciprocated attraction in
these newcomers to the island. "These are tranquil, soul-reviving
pictures" says Krueger. "If this work has an agenda, it is peace,
meditation, and awareness of one's soul. What these horses represent is a
natural beauty that should be relished and protected.
