El Archivo Histrico de Vieques, ubicado en el Fuerte Conde de
Mirasol,
contiene miles de pginas de documentos sobre Vieques desde la poca de
los caciques Cacimar y Yaureibo hasta nuestros tiempos. Incluye un
gran nmero de libros sobre la historia, folklore, poesa viequense y
una importante coleccin de artculos de peridicos y revistas que
cubren una variedad de temas relacionados con Vieques. Posee varios
informes de agencias gubernamentales sobre ecologa, economa,
arqueologa, poblacin y distintos aspectos de la problemtica social
que enfrenta nuestro pueblo. Documentos y materiales audio-visuales
sobre la presencia de la Marina de Guerra de Estados Unidos en Vieques
desde los aos cuarenta, su impacto en la vida de la isla y las
respuestas del pueblo a travs de los ltimos cincuenta aos de
ocupacin militar forman parte del Archivo Histrico de Vieques.
La documentacin de nuestro centro de estudio sobre Vieques procede de
varios archivos, bibliotecas y colecciones: Centro de Investigaciones
Histricas de la Universidad de Puerto Rico-Ro Piedras; Coleccin de
Libros Raros de la Biblioteca Lzaro, UPR-Ro Piedras; el Archivo
General de Puerto Rico; la Biblioteca General de Puerto Rico; el Ateneo
Puertorriqueo; el Registro Demogrfico de Vieques; los Archivos
Parroquiales de la Iglesia Catlica de Vieques; Archivos Municipales de
Vieques - Actas del Ayuntamiento, de las juntas locales de Sanidad e
Instruccin Pblica para finales del siglo pasado -; archivos
congresionales y militares en Washington y colecciones privadas.
Nuestro archivo histrico cuenta tambin con una interesante serie de
grabaciones de entrevistas con ancianos de la comunidad sobre la vida
de Vieques en los "tiempos de enantes". El Archivo Histrico de
Vieques posee un gran nmero de fotos y videos sobre nuestra isla.
Documentos en micropelcula disponibles incluyen el Censo Poblacional de
Vieques para 1910, La Gaceta Espaola (1844,1864, 1874), el peridico
Unin Obrera, 1915-19, documentos de los archivos parroquiales desde
1843 y los Registros Oficiales de Gobierno de la Ysla Espaola de
Vieques para los aos 1838 a 1845.
El Archivo Histrico de Vieques ofrece para escuelas y otras
organizaciones culturales-educativas una serie de conferencias
ilustradas con vistas fijas sobre varios temas relativos a la historia y
la realidad socio-econmica del pueblo viequense.

The Vieques Historic Archives, organized to facilitate and foment social
and historic investigation about the Island and people of Vieques, is
located in the Fort Conde de Mirasol on Vieques. The archives include
thousands of documents and other materials relating to five centuries of
Vieques' history, a great number of books and documents about
archaeology, history, folklore and poetry. Magazine and newspaper
articles from the Puerto Rican and international press cover a wide
variety of Vieques topics. Complete collections of three locally
published newspapers and programs for cultural and religious
activities such as the annual Patron Saint Festivals, offer an
interesting look at our island from a "viequense" perspective.
Documents and audio-visual materials pertaining to the impact of the
U.S. military presence on the lives of the community and the responses
of the people throughout the past half century of Navy occupation, make
up an important element of the Vieques Historic Archives.
Our documents come primarily from the following sources: Center for
Historic Investigation, University of Puerto Rico, Ro Piedras; General
Archives and Library of Puerto Rico; the Puerto Rican Atheneum; local
Catholic Church Parrochial Archives; Municipal Archives, including Local
Council, Instruction and Health boards dating from the nineteenth
century and the beginning of the twentieth; Vieques Demographic
Register; Congressional and Military Archives and private collections.
Audio-visual materiales include recordings (voice and video) of older
folk about life on the island in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, focussing on
the local sugar industry and the military expropiations here between
1941 and 1949 and the resulting forced migration of thousands of
viequenses to Saint Croix and other locations. The 1910 U.S. Federal
Population Census for Vieques (detailled descrpition of residents and
properties), catholic church books of baptism, death and marriage
dating from 1844 and the Official Government Register of the Spanish
Island of Vieques for the years 1838 to 1845, are available on
microfilm. An extensive collection of photos of the island and its
people also make up part of the Vieques Historic Archives.
