Educational Field Trips (Visits) for School and other Groups

The Fort Count Mirasol Museum in Vieques, administered by the Puerto Rican
Institute of Culture, (ICP) offers a very special alternative for school
field trips and for families searching for cultural and educational
activities. A visit to the Fort, with its brick walls, canons and
marvelous views toward the main island of Puerto Rico, Culebra and the
Virgin Islands, opens a unique window to the past of this corner of
"Borinquen" (the Taino Indian name for Puerto Rico) know as "la Isla Nena".
(Baby Island is the nickname for Vieques, taken from a poem written in the
1940's)

Built between 1845 and 1855, the for is included in the Federal Register of
Historic Places as well as the list of historic building of the ICP.
Together with an impressive restoration of the building, a Museum of
Vieques' Art and History was prepared on the second floor. Since the
inauguration of the Museum in August of 1991, tens of thousands of people
from all parts of Puerto Rico and other countries have visited the Fort.

Our museum consists of rooms dedicated to the culture of the indigenous
peoples, the island's historic process, historic architecture and the arts.
The Fort also has a meeting room with space for over a hundred people.

Groups that coordinate a visit to the Fort are welcomed by Historian and
Museum Director, Robert Rabin, who offers a short talk about the history of
the building and a tour of the exhibit rooms. Groups interested in
specific topics from Vieques history - archaeology, African slavery, the
sugar industry, Danish, British, French influences, the military presence
on Vieques, among other topics - can arrange for the presentation of a
slide show/talk during their visit to the Fort.

For more information or to make a reservation for your group, please call
or write Robert Rabin at the Museum Fort Count Mirasol, Magnolia 471,
