Vieques - June, 2003

Working in Vieques is a variable business. One client to whom we sold a house, which was soon converted into a guesthouse, told me recently that he was delighted the way things had worked out. But other people who go from wait staff job to wait staff job find it less satisfactory.

There are usually pick up jobs at restaurants, especially in season. But for the more established person who wants to find some source of income, it can be difficult.

One way, of course, is to start a business. A guesthouse, a computer caf, a restaurant (although that has its own problems), an inexpensive manicure shop, a rental sail shop, are some of the possible new business opportunities. We now have a gourmet food store (Chef Michael), quite a few rental car companies, and a flower and gift shop. Since there are only 9000 (more or less) full time residents of the island, although we are experiencing growth at the moment, there is not a lot of traffic for even a movie theatre or a bookstore.

Professional people, such as accountants are needed. Of course is you are an artist or a writer, you bring your own inner resources with you and Vieques is an ideal place to do your work. Artists will find it easy to market their wares to our stores (on consignment). Electricians, plumbers, wood workers and people in the building trades can generally find work.

Vieques is a marvelous place to live and work. It takes some diligence and some study to find the right niche for someone planning to move here and earn a living. I would be delighted to answer specific question you may have on this topic.
