Another Quiet Summer in Vieques NOT!
Here we are the middle of August, when one can reasonably expect to put in a lot of beach time, reading time and general goof-off time and what happens? A mini explosion of visitors. I call it mini because everything that happens in Vieques is sort of mini, compared to other islands. But for us, it has been remarkable. Not a car to be found on weekends, barely a room, and poor Chef Michael at the new Gourmet Food Shop is running out of brie and sushi grade tuna before he can turn around. But thats OK, because before long, Chef Michael will be turning around in a new location on the Atlantic side of the Island. There, I am told, one will be able to have a glass of wine, a hunk of cheese, a baguette and look out at the water. Dont miss breakfast at Tropical Baby in Esperanza; everything is fresh and do try anything with mango in it.
Also, one of the best new ideas to come along in Vieques for quite a while is the Steak House at the Crows Nest. What a treat! A well priced steak house featuring the best cuts of meat done exactly how one requests! The fries are those fabulous long shoe strings and the prices are quite reasonable. Way To Go Scott and Eli!
Dont forget there are several book exchanges on the island, at 18 Degrees North and at the Vieques Historical Trust, and Emily second Hand store in Isabelle has a good selection. Drop one off and collect one.
For those of you looking to come and live here, especially for those of you who are interested in working here, I would simply send my resume to every place located on www.enchanted-isle web site. Jobs should be fairly plentiful in season and the season is getting longer and longer.
As a realtor, I would like to clarify what has happened to real estate prices here. They have surely gone up, real estate has become, like anyplace experiencing a boom, higher than a year ago. Still, prices here are lower than most other islands and there are places coming on the market daily. There has actually not been very much speculation. The people we meet are people who want to retire here now or in a few years and are willing to buy now and rent until they can reside here permanently. Dont give up! Vieques is worth it.
The Flamboyans are in bloom and if you are lucky you can even spot a yellow one tucked in to all the glorious red ones. Everything is in bloom, the beaches are open and as glorious as ever and not crowded. The weather is warm, but the breezes are terrific and cool one off during the day and are pleasant at night. Let me know if you have any specific questions. One other thing, I have received some letters from people asking about nursing and other medical work. One does have to be licensed to get such work here so it is best to make sure of what you are able to do in Puerto Rico before coming.
