Vieques - Spring, 2001

I suppose no matter where you live, the coming of Spring has a certain evanescent languor. Here in Vieques, the signs of Spring are in the evidence of the budding flowers, the water temperature, the stunning and various shades of green along the roads. In terms of air temperature, Spring brings marginally warmer weather. We can not complain here as we could in the northeast, that we are glad the brutal winter is over, that we "deserve" Spring. Still, there is a palpable sense of renewal, of a lightening of the spirits and relief that the seasons still flow even in this land of near perfect weather year round.

Come to Vieques in the Spring and Summer! You will experience things the winter tourist never sees. It is more peaceful now, there are fewer tourists; the restaurants are less crowded; the staff is more playful, more accommodating. The restaurants coordinate and close like building blocks one at a time so there are always plenty of good ones open

The trees and flowers are budding, soon to be in full bloom. We have had plenty of good Spring rain, an hour in the morning, enough to cleanse the air and water the plants. See a Flamboyan Tree as it was meant to be. Alas, the winter tourists never see this.

Prices are by and large lower. Many homes offer summer prices. This affords people the ability to have a pool or to be on the beach. The hotels and guesthouses have special deals, many with cars. Call them to make sure you know the prices at this time of year.

The Vieques Historical Trust has had a facelift. Pay a visit to that establishment and enjoy the computers, the museum and especially the gift shop, which has more Caribbean keepsakes than ever before.

For those of you who are long timers, I am saddened to report that Patricia Hermann, Betty Young, Ernesto Troia and Dick Wilmont died in the past few months. All of these people were an integral part of the island. We will surely miss them. Senora Epifania Sanes Rodriguez, the mother of David Sanes, also died during this time. We express our sincerest condolences to the family.

As usual, please feel free to email me with your questions (I do not, however, know about airfares). I very much appreciate all the emails I have received in the past. Come to Vieques now! You will not be disappointed to visit our lovely island at its own time of renewal.
