Search Engine Tips
Search Engines can be your best friend or your
worst enemy.
When you're building your site or page, you need
to think ahead to how people are going to find you and craft your
words to work together throughout the page. This includes:
1) your Title- not only the text you see but your title tag in the
html (this is what you see in the blue bar at the top of your
browser),
2) your meta-tags- again html background stuff, ie., keywords and
description. Important only to a few Search Engines, but adds to
importance in most.
3) image Alt tags- these are text equivalent tags read be search
engines. Their purpose is to provide a text representation of your
image for the visually impaired or for those who may have text
only browsers. It should mirror the keyworded text common to all
elements of your site.
4) your text- Choose your words carefully. This is where the main
thrust of your targeted text should be. Flowery prose may be
wonderful and hypnotic to a visitor, but the Search Engines are
not impressed. Descriptives like "the best", "the
most incredible" or "without peer" can actually get
you penalized or banned from some search engines.
The bottom line- All four of these areas should
relate to each other. The important words in your text, should be
included in your keywords, your description, and your Alt
tags.
In the case of The Enchanted Isle the most
important tag or word is Vieques or Culebra. If this is not a
common thread throughout your site, you'll never be listed, except
if someone is just looking for "Your Casa" and you have
the only site in the whole of the Internet called "Your
Casa". That a 1 in more than 17 million chance.
It's getting harder today to get decent
placement on the Search Engines and in many ways it's a crap
shoot, but, if you follow these guidelines, you will increase your
chances of being listed.
