The Car Rental Company above is just one of the agents on
the island. The remainder can be found listed in the
Vieques (FYI) Information Page
on this website and contacted by phone.
About Car Rentals:
The cars available at the different agencies range from older
2 and 4 wheel Drive jeeps, Suzukis, Geo Trackers and Troopers to new Jeep
Wranglers and Liberties. All are kept running and licensed, regulated agencies
stand behind their vehicles and services. If you choose to rent from
unregulated, illegal, or fly-by-night individuals, it is buyer beware. All of
the agencies listed in either page of Enchanted-Isle.Com are licensed and
regulated by the Puerto Rican Government, have to meet certain standards
and business practices. They can be fined or lose their licenses, if
complaints are filed against them. This is not the case with unlicensed
rentals.

When to Rent:
It is recommended that you rent your vehicles as far in
advance as possible. If you are coming to Vieques during the period of
mid-December through the end of April at least, you should make your
reservations 6 - 8 months in advance as this is the high season. The rest of
the year, you should probably try to rent at least 2 months in advance to
reserve the car you want. There are times when you still don't need to rent
much before you arrive, but this is a gray area, which seems to be getting
harder to discern every year. It's only a short call to be sure you can go to
your favorite secluded beach. Don't be disappointed.

Traveler Tips and the Laws:
-
Please be careful when driving in Vieques. The roads are
narrow, the hills can steep and the corners with the propensity for over
growth on the road sides can leave you blind to oncoming traffic. Be aware
that there may be animals in the road as well as fence lines are often
lacking or even cut to allow extended grazing. It is not uncommon to see
cows, horses, and iguanas in the road.
-
Wear your seatbelt, fines are $50 per person (driver is
responsible for passengers).
-
Cows, horses and Bulls at night are still an extreme hazard
as many blend with the darkness. They are large enough to "Total" a
car and seriously injure the occupants.
-
Be Aware that the Policia do occasionally set up road side
checks and administer breathalyzer tests, if you seem to have had too much to
drink.
-
Drinking and Driving IS against the law, no matter what you
may see someone else doing. It's not an acceptable excuse that so and so
was doing it.
-
Always wear your seatbelt - it's the law!
-
Speed Limit is 35mph on the main roads, 25mph in Barrios unless
posted.
-
Speed limit is 10-15mph in town and beach roads
-
"No Estacione" means No Parking!
-
Yellow and blue curbs are "No Parking Zones."
-
A Curb with a broken whit line is 15 minute parking and
solid white curb is full term parking. Sometimes the paint is illegible, but
the law still applies. If there's no one parked anywhere around that is
probably a good clue.
-
Be Safe! Always stop at every intersection, even if they do not have signs.
-
If you are involved in an accident, call the police (787)
741-2020, call the rental company and get a report for them.
-
It is Illegal to drive on the beach. You will be fined. Most
of the time, parking on the beach side of the road means you're on the
beach.
-
DO NOT LOCK YOUR CAR AT THE BEACH - leave a window open, and
do not leave valuables in the car or unattended at the beach
-
DO LOCK YOUR CAR - in town, at restaurants, at your lodging
-
Respect the locals. Ask us if we speak English first. Most
of us do and will if you are polite.
-
Don't throw your trash in the water and try not to bring
glass containers to the beach.
Show some respect for the island and leave it as you would like it to be
when you return. DO NOT LITTER!
Besides, it's against the law, and it is a very LARGE fine!
