Another day, another  passel of information. I started the day with a cup of Yaucono coffee and a little fresh papaya, then out to document the world.

As I head for the hills of La Llave, I passed by Colmado Ruiz in Esperanza, and realized that the "What's Happenin" article didn't include their rooms in the bargain places issue. Candido (the owner) has two floors of rooms above his small grocery store, with rates starting around $20/night. They're clean and comfortable with no frills and a great option for the thrifty traveler.

La Llave is on the top of the south western most portion of the civilian area of the island. The views, forever! The houses are very special, secluded, private, and most have pools. You may never leave. (The first picture from La Llave is an old one, but the view...)

After leaving that serene area, I headed over to Pilón., which is the hills just to the north of La Llave. There are some great houses  and a couple of Guesthouses in the hills here. Hix Island House is three funky raw concrete minimalist construction building with apartments and a pool. La Finca Caribe is up the street for a real retro vacation in an all wood very funky guesthouse. Again, it has a pool. At the other end of the scale, the very posh Casa Cielo sits atop the highest hill in Pilón, has large, airy rooms, great breezes, a pool and magnificent views!

Sitting in the hillside, sort of in between or among all this is Chez Shack. It is owned and operated by "Duffy". Duffy has had restaurants and clubs all over the Caribbean and even in Spain. They have all been successful. His latest adventure is no different. If you want a great night out while in Vieques, book reservations at the "Shack". On Grill Night he serves up a buffet with your choice of meat, fish or chicken. He is also talking about a second grill night and a "stick" night (shish-ka-bob). On Grill Night he has a steel band play. If you don't have reservations, you may be out of luck.

Leaving Pilón, we head thru Puerto Real and into Florida by the Crow's Nest. It is an upscale guesthouse with mini apartments, a pool and good restaurant. It has great views and breezes. I helped build it and even stayed there a while until my house closed. I heartily recommend it. Be sure and tell Liz, I said Hi!  She won't charge you extra, I promise.

There are beautiful sunsets from everywhere on Vieques. These were taken from Isabel II. You should try them from The Inn at the "Blu Bar", Bananas and Mar Azul!
