There are many Publico drivers that will give you tours of the island. One that comes highly recommended is Lolo Felix. He can be reached at cel# 485-5447. His prices are reasonable at $40-$50 a tour. Don't forget to tip him. That big V8 engine eats up the profits fast. While in Vieques, there are some things that are a must do. You MUST go to Bioluminescent Bay at night. There are several people doing trips. All are eco-friendly. For the more adventurous there are kayaks. Blue Caribe Divers arranges these and also Aqua Frenzy. Island Adventures takes you out on an electric powered pontoon boat. Sharon will leave you with a complete understanding of the organisms, their importance, and the bay's importance in the natural world. It is one of the most magnificent of this type of bay, and one of the few left in the world. I remember going to Bio-Bay 20 years ago, and passing by hundreds of glowing objects just outside the entrance to the bay. Upon closer inspection, it was a school of squid, which had just dined on the bio-luminescent phyto-plankton in the bay. It was an extraordinary site. You should see the old Spanish and island architecture left in Isabel II before its gone. After that the only pictures left will be at Fort Conde de Marisol. Much of the history of Vieques has been archived in the fort, along with many artifacts. Go. It was the last Spanish fort built in the New World. Also on the must see old buildings list is El Faro, the Punta Mulas Lighthouse in Isabel II just above the ferry landing. You may never see it, but on the list of TRY TO SEE'S is the Green Flash. This sunset anomaly is viewed from The Inn on the Blue, Bananas and Mar Azul. They just happen to have sunset drinks to go along with the viewing, although the type of drink isn't a factor in seeing it. Rum Punches are highly recommended and slightly different everywhere. Rum always worked for me at Happy Hour, but I still never saw the flash. If you're looking to do a little shopping for Caribbean fashions, you have Bali Llama in Esperanza and Isabel II. Everything is designed and made in Vieques, and many things carry the BAK label. Get it?!? Next door in Esperanza, there is Kim's Cabin. They have great tropical and Caribbean styles as well as replacements for your Ray-Bans, if you lose them. Two "MUST BUYS" for me are Yaucono coffee and Barrilito 3 star Rum. It's the Puerto Rican Brandy of Rums. Also, if you like cigars, Blanco's store across from the Inn on the Blue Horizon sells a local tobacco, Cuban-rolled cigar that my cigar smoking buddies buy by the bundle when here. Digest that and move on to tomorrow. Please note: All images in this Weblogue are the sole property of Positive Image Graphix.
