There were a few things I wanted to do that there weren't enough days for. Hard to believe, but true. If fewer of my friends had been off-island on vacation, I probably would have accomplished even less. I barely got to say Hi! to many, and bye to even fewer. Some I never saw. A few I saw, but don't remember] Hi! I had a great time. Next time I hope to finish what I started. On this final day, I'll mention a few more things I wanted to do. When I lived there, we would go to Mar Azul for Thai food on Wednesdays. Phil (believe it-he's Thai) cooked excellent dinners to order and would make it as hot or as mild as you wanted. I know! I supplied his fresh Thai chiles and I always asked for it HOT!, and he never disappointed me. He is now cooking Wednesday night Thai Night at the Crab Walk Cafe and I missed it. Sorry Phil, next time! And I never got a chance to try out a tour on Capt. Richard's Glass Bottom Boat. He's always given excellent snorkel tour and now you can do it without getting wet. In season he's going to do a sunset dance cruise maybe! Oh,
for those of you who are wondering how the protests are going or how
they're affecting the island. They are. They are still going on, but are
much more subdued and won't affect anyone's visit, but the bad press has
a negative effect on tourism. There is no violence and no threat of
violence. Talks are proceeding on ceding Navy land to government, and
the Navy seems to be trying to make some effort at reconciliation. Will
it be enough to satisfy the hard core protesters? Probably not. The real
issues will take years to iron out. In the meantime the rhetoric will
continue on both sides. That
said, I return my site to its non-political nature. Oh ya! Almost forgot about the truly local food places. There are many. Posada Vistamar is my favorite place to eat, the best fried fish, steamed fish, and fish asopao (stew). My dish of choice is Camarónes a la Criollo (shrimp in Creole sauce), Conch Salad, and Octopus Salad. She also has the best Arepas on the island. El Quenepo is right on the strip in Esperanza and serves excellent fish and pastelillos (meat or seafood turnovers). Tito Bloques' is one block back on a side street and has similar dishes, different location. Clarkey's BBQ in Santa Maria has whole BBQ chicken, Ribs, and Pernil Asado (Spit Roast Pork) . On the weekends, the roadside places open and have different items. Just outside Sun Bay is the Pincho guy. A "pincho" is skewered BBQ pork. I always pick up two on my way to the beach. Across the street is another mobile restaurant, that serves up everything from snacks to full meals. On the strip in Esperanza, Lucy, one of the coach operators has "Papas Rellenos" (meat stuffed fried mashed potatoes), and they're excellent. Most of them also serve pastelillos, Rice & Beans, arroz con gandules, and many other delicious dishes, so don't be shy. Try out your Spanish, or tell them what you want in English, because they all understand. Enjoy yourself, try a Medalla (a PR lite beer), overeat, unwind, and go home relaxed.
