Hi everyone,
Love and Football, Football and Love. No
matter which comes first in your life, February in Vieques has it all.
Super Bowl Sunday is a party hearty tradition on the island.
Every bar and restaurant with a TV will be showing the game. Some, like the
Inn on the Blue Horizon, have planned a special barbeque, with
reservation seating upstairs, (call 787-741-3381 for info); others will simply
have plenty of cold beer and a fun crowd. This year’s special place to watch the
game is Roy’s Coffee House in town, also known as the
Pink House. Our own Lyman Tarkowski will be behind the bar. He has door
prizes planned to go along with the inevitable insult he will fling your way.
Roy’s has several screens, both inside and on the patio, so the game will be in
surround sound. It promises to be great fun. For more information call Roy’s at
787-741-0685.
On to the love part. Of course, Valentine’s Day falls on Thursday, the 14th. The
restaurants on the island ranging from sushi to tapas to Italian to fusion to
continental cuisine are open and ready to make your night very special.
Café Media Luna, located in downtown Isabel Segunda has
reorganized and is featuring Italian Cuisine courtesy of Chef Drew. The menu
offers classics like Osso Bucco and linguine with fresh clam sauce. The small
balcony tables on the second floor are wonderfully private and have an Old San
Juan flair. (There are only a few of them so no whining if you are seated
inside.) Appetizers begin around $8, with entrees beginning at $19. For
reservations call 787-741-2594
It is rumored that Duffy will be opening Chez Shack for more
than just Monday Grill night. The Pilon atmosphere is perfect for a Valentine’s
Dinner with the coquis croaking and the rain forest right next to your table. As
he has for over forty years, Duffy knows how to make dining fun. For
reservations call 787-741-2175.
The spirit of Valentine’s Day can and should be celebrated every day. It does
not have to cost money, either. When was the last time you simply took a walk?
Whether as a couple, as a family, with your four legged friend(s), or by
yourself, taking a stroll is relaxing and healthy. So ditch the cell phone and
go out to Sun Bay at around 5pm or so. A walk along the waters
edge is great for your feet (people spend lots of money on pedicure sand scrubs)
and the sunset is great for your soul.
Another great walk is Mosquito Pier. Sun up or sun down, the
pier always has a breeze and some days the salt spray will kiss your cheeks. The
daytime views of the main island are fantastic and the nighttime vistas look
like millions of twinkle lights. For a more private walk, head out toward
Green Beach. Just after the water company pump station is a
turn to the right. The road is washed out and bumpy. You will come to a couple
of pull offs. Stop the car at one of those and walk the beach.
If you prefer to walk with a tour the Vieques Historical Conservation Trust
(VHCT) is hosting some walks this month. Playa Grande tours
including the old sugar ruins are being given on the 7th and the 21st, beginning
at 9am. $30 adults, $15 children. On the 19th, at 6:30am, is a Bird Walk with
Rich Puffer. There is no cost for this walk, but donations are greatly
appreciated so the Trust can continue its work with the local school children
and the environment. For information call the Trust at 787-741-8850.
On Saturday, February 23rd, visitors and residents will have the opportunity to
show some love by attending the Vieques Humane Society and Animal
Rescue’s Art Auction Fundraiser. This all important fundraiser features
art created by local artists and donated to the shelter. This year the theme is
“An Elegant Evening and Art Auction”. It will truly be an elegant evening as the
location is the fabulous home of Tom and Kevin, aka the Bravos Boys, who have
graciously opened their doors for this event. Owen, from Casa de Amistad
Guest House, is the auctioneer, and is guaranteed wring every penny
from your pocket. It will be a great time for a great cause. For information and
tickets call Mary Ann at 787-741-1363, Laura at 787-741-0487, Garage
Cuts Salon 787-741-3524 or Caribbean Walk
787-741-7770. Tickets are $50 and are limited.
Another way to assist the Humane Society is to help adopted animals get to their
new homes in the States. The airlines require that transported animals be
accompanied
by a ticketed passenger. The shelter does all the arranging. They bring the
animals to the San Juan airport, and have someone to pick them up at the other
end. If you are willing, give the shelter a call at 787-741-0209. Let them know
when you are flying and where.
Dr. Andrea Kaufmann, Vieques’ local veterinarian, is offering
free spay and neuter clinics the first three weeks of February. It is for people
who otherwise could not afford to have their animals altered. Spread the word to
your friends and neighbors. For details call the Clinica de Animales
at 787-741-1826.
February in Vieques is all about love and doing the things you love. Get out
there and do it.
Thanks for reading!
