As you can see the month if full of great things to do! Come out and participate in the activities. As always I suggest making reservations when dining out. One of my favorite events is the Art Auction to benefit the Humane Society. Eve and Alec, Casa Vieja Gallery, have been running this for 5 years now. Barry and Diane, La Campesina, generously donate the use of the restaurant, the beverages and much of the food. Eve and Alec are accepting artwork to be auctioned off as well as selling tickets at their gallery. All the local artists donate work (paintings, pottery, clocks and more) and all of it is wonderful, pieces to treasure! Tickets are also available at Blue Caribe Dive Shop, La Campesina, Vieques Humane Society or from Patty or Dotti at Banana's. The ticket also buys you a chance to win the Art Raffle and you don't need to be present to win. Call Casa Vieja Gallery for more information.
There is a new project in the works for Sun Bay. The National Parks Company is presenting a meeting on March 1st to tell the community of the new plans. The development includes 50 Villas or Cabins, a new administration building, new camping facilities, sidewalks, a restaurant and cafeteria, shower facilities and lockers. Also there will be new parking areas, 2 Volleyball Courts, a Basketball Court and a track for walking or running. As many of you who have visited Sun Bay can imagine, the project is getting mixed reviews. The biggest concern is what effect this could have on Bio Bay. Many will be attending the meeting to learn more about the project and to voice their concerns about the impact that it could have on Bio Bay. On the plus side, the project will create many jobs for people during and after completion. Hopefully I will have more news to share about this next month.
Here is some Paso Fino Horse trivia for you! For major (National and International) horse shows, owners must provide a genealogy report, proven by DNA testing, of 3 generations of lineage! Once proven owners can then register their horses in various associations around the globe. Puerto Rico has 3 associations. Los Puros consists of Puerto Rican Paso Finos registered with the Dept. of Agriculture proving pure PR bloodlines. Los Abietos and Pro Paso consist of horses with mixed Paso Fino bloodlines, for example a horse from a PR Paso Fino mare and a Colombian Paso Fino sire. For these associations you do not have to prove 3 generations of pure bloodlines.
When traveling around Puerto Rico remember to buckle up. Anyone found not wearing a seat belt in a car will be fined $50. This includes people in the back seats too, so I am told.
Traveling between Vieques and Culebra has gotten much easier and is not very expensive. Isla Nena flies regularly between the islands and has 2 new planes. Give them a call at 787-741-1577 or 741-3632.
