Yes, I am currently in Pennsylvania having lots of tests done. If you read last months article you will know that my dogs dragged me down the street and I found that I had pneumonia when I got the chest x-ray. Well to bring everybody up to date, I was hospitalized in Fajardo, PR with pneumonia and a partially collapsed lung. The CT Scan showed some other questionable things so the doctor that was treating me scheduled a bronchoscopy to see what was going on. Well the tissue samples he took showed lung cancer so……. I am having tests done in PA to find out exactly what is there and where. I must say that my hospital visit in Fajardo was not an unpleasant experience. I really liked my pulmonary specialist, and the intern that took my history when I arrived. The Internist, you need one of these as they responsible for admitting and releasing patients, was nice also but I really did not have that much interaction with him. Most of the nurses did not speak English and so they were uncomfortable with me and the limited communication skills. Nursing care was somewhat lacking but maybe because I was not seriously ill it just seemed that way. When you go to the hospital in PR you must pack your hospital kit which should include your own pillow, blanket towel, pajamas, tooth brush, if necessary a bed pan (so I am told) and you should have friends that check on you as it seems that the hospital counts on family to do many of the things you would expect a nurse to do. I asked for ice water one time, they brought me a cup that was about the size used for a urine specimen, loaded with ice! I just refilled a plastic water bottle after that! Some of the food was good, I passed on the fish that was served once, so I was glad that I had brought a 6-pack of Ensure along just in case I could not eat something that was served. I was fortunate in that my sister, Helen Davis (Connections Real Estate) came to check on me regularly (thank goodness she is fluent in Spanish) and that my niece also arrived from PA to make sure I was being taken care of. Tori (my niece) was great at bringing me Hagen Daz milkshakes and other fast foods that I crave that are not available in Vieques! Some visiting rules that you should be aware of if you unfortunately end up having to go or visit the hospital:
We learned most of these the hard way! Tori arrived one day dressed
inappropriately and they let her come upstairs to see me to tell me she had to
leave. Oh they confiscated the Subway sandwich she brought also! We went
downstairs and outside of the hospital where I drank my milkshake when one of
the nurses that spoke English asked what we were doing. She then said that Tori
could go up if she had pants so we put her in some pajama pants which was
acceptable! I later walked out of the hospital with her when they chased me down
the steps to tell me I was not allowed to leave the floor! Of course Tori did
enter the hospital 3 times with her 15 month old son before they told her he was
not allowed so needless to say I am sure I was not their favorite patient!
As far as what is going on in PA, I am waiting for the results of the PET and CT
Scan (the one in PR showed the pneumonia and collapsed lung so they could not
see anything else there) and some other tests. I am sure that once we have the
results we will explore treatment options and places to be treated. So for now
we just play the waiting game. But for all of you that have known what is going
on, thanks for the prayers, well wishes and positive energy that you are sending
my way, believe me I can feel it!
Jim Starke, the webmaster, happens to be in Vieques so he is going to do a
limited calendar and updates on what’s happenin'. Some of what I can tell you is
that there will be an awesome party hosted by Coqui Fire at the Mar Azul on . It
will be the 3rd anniversary party/ introduction of a new hot sauce party/ and a
cook-off with prizes in appetizers, main courses and desserts. All entries must
be made with one of the Coqui Fire Hot Sauces!
This should be a fabulous event and very busy, so if you are on island don’t
miss it.
Not sure what is happening the weekend that usually we have Patronales,
they said they may have something at Sun Bay but nothing downtown because of all
the construction going on.
Hey, join Andrew (my nephew) at the Mar Azul every Saturday night as he
hosts Karaoke there. Barry and Laurel, owners of the equipment, asked Andrew
if he would like to do it and with some convincing he has agreed to host the
party. Needless to say I really miss it now as it is in my neighborhood every
week. Unfortunately Barry and Laurel have returned to California for the next
several months. A huge thanks to them for taking care of my dogs while I was
hospitalized in PR and for being such wonderful friends. I should also mention
that Becker, one of my co-workers (and again dear friend) at the Mar Azul, is on
doggie duty while I am stateside. I have heard that he is teaching the dogs
“leash” manners so that there will not be another broken rib incident! Be
sure to hear Becker sing Country at Saturday Karaoke! Having been away for
close to 2 weeks so far I can legitimately say that Vieques is home and I miss
being home. The support system there is just incredible and I never imagined
that I would have so many wonderful friends that would be so concerned about my
well being.
Jim take over for now!
OK! The Coqui Fire Cook-off is on July 13th and the new sauce Jim is
introducing is called Passionate Frog. La Sirena is hosting a Friday
Dance night every Friday night. Island Steak House is continuing its Nova
Latino nights on July 8th(my birthday) and the 22nd and their mouth-watering
Sunday Prime Rib Night. Duffy & Chez Shack will be back up and
running on Sunday July 2nd with his Summer BBQ Festival with Will Colon
and his band of Renown's. The bar opens at 5pm and Dinner starts at 6pm.
UPDATE: I was at Duffy's opening and the music was
good and the food was great! Don't miss it on Sundays this summer.
Oh, and Patronales is on, no details beyond the dates 15th, 16th and 17th. Of course the 18th is a holiday, so people will still be figuring out which end is up on that day too.
Affirm with me that Judy is in our thoughts, that she is cancer-free and on her way back to Vieques to be Isabel Segunda's Best Bad Girl Karaoke Crooner!
