Hi everyone,
It's me again. Jim Starke. Just filling in. Not a lot to report this month. August is typically quiet.
Congratulations to co-owner Elí Belendez, he is now a member of the 6 month
club at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center! His last check-up revealed that there is
absolutely no cancer activity! He will continue follow-up care in Houston at the
end of the year. This is excellent news for all his family, friends and business
associates.
Co-owner Judy Leach has been in Pennsylvania for the past 2 months where she is
now doing a different chemotherapy protocol and a short course of radiation. The
drug she was taking in the spring left her feeling very tired and weak so she is
working now on getting her strength back. She is anxious to return to Vieques
when she is done with these treatments.
Both Elí and Judy appreciate all the prayers, positive thoughts and well wishes
that so many people have sent their way. They also wish to thank all those that
have provided stories and information to be used in Vieques Events in the past
months, it has been a real help and definitely makes it more of a community
publication.
There is an advisory to residents and visitors by the companies doing the live ordinance removal on the former bases.
PUBLIC SAFETY HAZARD: To protect Vieques residents
and visitors, roads leading to the areas that contain munitions
and explosives are blocked by barricades with warning signs.
However, some people visiting Vieques in boats are known to
be anchoring and trespassing in areas at the eastern end of
Vieques that could be dangerous. FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY,
PLEASE STAY OUT OF THE RESTRICTED AREAS.on.
The areas are clearly marked and if you ignore them, you will put yourself and those with you at risk..
For the Sports Fans: The Vieques Caribes are poised to clinch a playoff berth in their division according to reporter Robert Becker of Vieques Events and the playoff schedule will be announced sometime in August. If you're around and want to see them play, ask around at Mar Azul. Someone will steer you in the right direction.
There has also been a lot of good dialogue on the development plans for the island. See this month's Vieques Events for the particulars.
I wish you all a great stay on the island, and trust that this
process of late calendars will be straightened out soon.
Know your perfection Judy.
In Peace,
Jim Starke
